Delete Your BuyQuick Account and Data

How to close your BuyQuick account and request deletion of your personal data, what happens to your wallet balance and open escrow trades, what we delete, and what we are required by law to keep.

This page explains how to close your BuyQuick account and how to ask us to delete your personal data. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which describes everything else we do with personal data. If the two ever disagree, the Privacy Policy governs.

1. Two different requests

People usually mean one of two things, and it is worth being clear which you want, because the outcomes differ:

  • Close my account. Your BuyQuick account is deactivated and you can no longer sign in, transact, or use the merchant API. Records we are legally required to keep are retained in restricted form.
  • Delete my personal data. A data-subject erasure request under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA). We delete what we are not required to keep, and we tell you plainly what we must keep and why.

In practice, closing your account triggers the deletion process described below. You may also ask us to delete specific information without closing your account — see section 8.

2. Before you ask us to delete anything

BuyQuick holds money and mediates transactions between people. Some things cannot be undone once an account is closed, so please settle them first. We will tell you if any of these apply when you submit your request.

  • Withdraw your wallet balance. Transfer any remaining balance to your bank account. We do not delete an account holding customer funds, and an unclaimed balance is handled under our terms and applicable law rather than simply written off.
  • Close open escrow trades. Any marketplace transaction still in escrow — awaiting delivery, acceptance or release — must be completed or cancelled. Deleting a party mid-trade would leave the counterparty without recourse.
  • Resolve open disputes. If you have raised or are subject to a dispute, chargeback or complaint, it must be concluded first. We keep the evidence for the dispute while it is running.
  • Let pending transactions finish. Bill payments, airtime and data purchases, transfers and token purchases that are still in flight need to reach a final state so that a failure can be reversed to you.
  • Merchants: revoke your API keys and migrate any integration first. Closure stops API access immediately and any live integration calling our endpoints will begin failing. See section 7.
  • Referral and cashback: unclaimed or unvested rewards are forfeited on closure. Credit anything already earned to your wallet and withdraw it before you ask us to close the account.

3. How to make the request

Use any one of these. You do not need to use more than one.

  • In the BuyQuick mobile app: Profile → Settings → Delete account, and follow the prompts.
  • By email: write to customer@buyquick.ng from the email address on your BuyQuick account, with the subject line “Account Deletion Request” (or “Data Deletion Request” if you want deletion without closing the account). Tell us the registered mobile number on the account.
  • By telephone: +234-9034313685 during business hours. We will still send a written confirmation to the address on the account before acting.

Requests are free. We will not charge you to close an account or to exercise a data-protection right, except where the law allows a fee for a manifestly unfounded or excessive request.

4. Confirming it is really you

A deletion request is irreversible, so we verify it before acting. Deleting the wrong person’s account on an unverified instruction would itself be a serious data-protection failure.

We will normally verify through control of the registered mobile number or email address, and we may ask for additional confirmation proportionate to the account — for example where the account has transacted at volume, holds a balance, is a merchant account, or where the request arrives from a channel we cannot tie to the account. We do not ask for your transaction PIN or password at any point in this process, and no member of BuyQuick staff will ever request it.

5. What happens, and when

  1. Acknowledgement — within 72 hours. We confirm we have the request and tell you if anything in section 2 is blocking it.
  2. Verification. As described in section 4.
  3. Deactivation — on verification. Sign-in, transactions and API access stop. There is a short cooling-off window during which you may cancel the request by contacting support; we will tell you the exact date when we acknowledge.
  4. Deletion — within 30 days of verification. We delete or irreversibly anonymise everything we are not required to retain. Where a request is complex we may extend this, and we will tell you why before the 30 days expire.
  5. Backups — within 90 days. Encrypted backups and disaster-recovery copies roll over on their own cycle. Deleted data stays in those copies until they expire, is not restored to live systems, and is not used for any purpose in the meantime.

6. What we delete, and what we must keep

Deleted or irreversibly anonymised: your profile and contact details, saved beneficiaries and payment shortcuts, device and push-notification tokens, marketing preferences and marketing history, support conversations not attached to a live dispute or investigation, marketplace listings you created, referral relationships going forward, and your sign-in credentials.

Retained, because the law requires it: transaction records and the identity and verification records attached to them. As a payments business, BuyQuick is subject to Central Bank of Nigeria anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing record-keeping rules, which require transaction and customer-identification records to be kept for at least five years after the transaction or after the account relationship ends, whichever is later. The NDPA expressly allows retention where it is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, and this is one. Records kept on this basis are restricted to compliance, audit, regulatory and legal-defence use — they are not used for marketing, profiling, credit decisions or product analytics.

We may also retain, for as long as necessary and no longer: records needed for an ongoing dispute, chargeback, complaint, investigation, regulatory request or legal claim; records of fraud, abuse or security incidents, so that a closed account cannot be used to reset a ban and repeat the conduct; and aggregated or de-identified statistics that can no longer be linked back to you.

7. Merchant and API accounts

If you hold a merchant or API account, closure ends API access and settlement immediately. Please revoke your API keys, stop outbound calls to our endpoints and reconcile outstanding settlements before requesting closure.

Where your business submitted personal data about your own customers to BuyQuick, you are the controller of that data and BuyQuick processes it on your instructions. Deleting your merchant account does not by itself delete transaction records we are required to keep under section 6, and it does not discharge your own obligations to your customers. Tell us in the request if you also need a processor-level deletion, and we will handle it separately.

8. Deleting some data without closing your account

You do not have to close your account to exercise your rights. You may ask us to correct inaccurate details, remove a saved beneficiary or payment shortcut, withdraw consent for marketing, unsubscribe from promotional messages, or delete specific information that is not required for the service or for legal compliance. Email customer@buyquick.ng and describe what you want removed.

Some information cannot be removed while the account is open, because the service cannot run without it — your mobile number is the account identifier, and verified identity information underpins transaction limits and compliance checks.

9. Advertising and device identifiers

You can reset or delete the advertising identifier your phone gives to apps at any time, without contacting us and without closing your account: on Android, Settings → Privacy → Ads (delete or reset advertising ID); on iOS, Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, and per-app tracking permission. Doing so does not affect your ability to use BuyQuick. Our Privacy Policy describes the identifiers and measurement technologies currently in use. On our website you can change your advertising-cookie choice at any time using the Cookie choices link in the footer.

10. If we cannot fully comply

If we have to refuse a request, or can only act on part of it, we will tell you which part and the specific reason — normally a legal retention obligation under section 6 or an unresolved item under section 2. A refusal on one ground does not affect the rest of the request.

11. Complaints

If you are not satisfied with how we handled your request, tell us first at customer@buyquick.ng so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and to seek any other remedy available to you under Nigerian law.
